The Borgias Celebrated Crimes eBook Alexandre Dumas père
The infamous Borgia family certainly provides enough fodder for a page-turning drama-- power, sex, murder, incest, adultery, war, religion, corruption--but all too often the narrative pull is weighed down by an encyclopedic recitation of inconsequential facts.Instead of letting the larger than life personalities dominate the story, we get an endless parade of military formations, troop movements, and a history of Swiss mercenaries. While the center of action is dominated by the unholy trinity of Pope Alexander VI, his militaristic son Caesare, and his daughter Lucrezia, the book features a cast of hundreds and it becomes difficult (at least for this reader) to keep track of all the people and places and how they related. Vitellozza and Bentivoglio are people; Sinigalia and Caesna are places. I know Charles is King of France and Ferdinand and Isabella are from Spain, and Machiavelli is from Florence, but I am not sure about Ugo di Cardona or Oliverotto da Fermo.
There's a lot of squabbling between the Vatican and the College of Cardinals and between the Borgias and the other preeminent Italian families, but just as the political in-fighting becomes tedious, Dumas delivers a great story about Caesere changing out of his Cardinal robes into the black of a nighttime assassin and marauder. We also get a truly incredible story of a prison break-out as well as the poisonings that are synonymous with the Borgia family.
Two little anecdotes for the curious:
Dumas gives us the recipe for making the famous Borgia murder weapon: A strong dose of arsenic was administered to a boar; as soon as the poison began to take effect, he was hung up by his heels; convulsions supervened, and a froth deadly and abundant ran out from his jaws; it was this froth, collected into a silver vessel and transferred into a bottle hermetically sealed, that made the liquid poison.
And, once, when Caesare accidentally dosed himself, he prepared a strange homemade remedy: every day a bull was brought in, turned over on his back and tied by his four legs to the four posts; then, when he was thus fixed, a cut was made in his belly a foot and a half long, through which the intestines were drawn out; then Caesar slipped into this living bath of blood: when the bull was dead, Caesar was taken out and rolled up in burning hot blankets, where, after copious perspirations, he almost always felt some sort of relief.
Still, in the end, we don't enough of these peculiar facts or enough action and suspense to recommend it to anyone other than those already interested in the subject.

The Borgias Celebrated Crimes eBook Alexandre Dumas père Reviews
Very informative read!
Excellent!
A good rendition of the politics of the time once you get into the rhythm of the speech. Would have like more information on pope Alexander & Lucrezia though. Dumas is excellent at the details however.
A historical novel full of historical facts no doubt exactly as the events happened. Beautifully narrated by the master story teller. An excellent read.
A nice companion piece to the Borgia's tv tale. It also puts the reformation in some historical context. Power corrupts those who wield it, only checks and balances work to keep bureaucrats from becoming oppressive. The book also illustrates how difficult it is to resist even poorly organized states. It's not gun nuts with AK 47's that keep us free, it's organized competing interests resolved at the ballot box that best insure the common man's interest from rape and pillage by our powerful elites be they secular or religious.
Correct but somewhat dry after watching The Borgias on Showtime. Definitely worth the read as it is a free download
The text contained massive amounts of typos. Should have been proof-read by someone other than a computer program. Very distracting from the information Dumas was trying to convey to the reader. Otherwise, if you are interested in the political maneuvering and military warfare of the Borgia family - this is the book for you. Lots of facts, places and first hand reports. Following the story of the family is slightly more difficult. I was looking for a more personal look at this infamous family and friends.
